The Quick Selection tool is one of the fastest ways to make a customizable selection in Photoshop. Although it automatically makes selections around your subject, you are still in control of how and where that selection is being applied.
The Quick Selection tool is ideal for fast image cut-outs and background removals. It is one of my most used tools when I need to quickly cut out an image in Photoshop with little to no hassle.
The final downside is that the Quick Selection tool will often leave your image with jagged and rough edges when zoomed in. Fortunately, this issue can be quickly resolved using an edge refining trick. Click here to learn how to enhance the Quick Selection tool. The Object Selection tool works by automatically snapping to the edge of your subject. You can define the selection area with two modes that act similar to the marquee and lasso tools.
The Object Selection tool is a great alternative to the Quick Selection tool and requires far less manual painting. With the object selection tool, you define an area and Photoshop will do the rest. The Object Selection Tool may not be automatically available to you. You can do this by clicking on the three horizontal dots at the bottom of the toolbar.
A dialogue box will appear and you will find the Object Selection Tool in the right panel. To add it to your main toolbar, click and drag the tool over to place it among your Quick Selection tool and Magic Wand tool. So when is best to use the Object Selection tool?
If you are wanting to quickly cut out a person, even against a busy background; this is the tool to do it. Unlike most auto-selection tools in Photoshop, the Object Selection tool does a remarkable job to define edges and snap a selection to it. The Object Selection tool works best when cutting out images of people, horizons, and objects against a relatively clean background.
Access the Object Selection tool by pressing W or clicking the Object Selection tool icon in your toolbar. Once you have selected the Object Selection tool, a settings bar will appear at the top of your Photoshop window.
This is where you can change the mode and selection method. To get your selection started, make sure the single square icon is selected. This option allows you to create a new selection. Next, select your desired mode. You have two options: the rectangle or the lasso mode. The rectangle mode works a lot like the rectangular marquee tool. This option lets you draw a rectangular selection around your subject, and it will automatically snap to the edges. The lasso mode allows you to hand draw a line to create a selection.
Manually draw the lasso around your subject and finish by connecting both ends. This selection will automatically snap to the edges of your subject. Personally, I prefer using the rectangle mode for its ease of use. Play around with both modes to see which works best for you. Click and drag to create your selection.
In this example, I am creating a rectangle around my subject by clicking and dragging. Once the whole subject is within the rectangle, I let go of the mouse and Photoshop automatically selects the edges of my subject.
It typically does an impressive job. Like all automatic selections in Photoshop, they need a little bit of refining. In this example, a little bit of the edge got missed. You can also go to the settings bar instead of using a keyboard shortcut. The solid double square represents adding a selection, the single solid and single transparent square represents subtracting your selection. Refine your selection by drawing near the edge of your active selection.
It will add or subtract depending on your toolbar settings. The selection will be automatically transferred onto the layer mask and cut out your image. The Object Selection tool in Photoshop makes clean automatic selections with less work than any other tool in the program. With the Object Selection tool, you can cut out an image with almost no effort.
The two selection modes work great to easily define the area or subject you want to select. I love using both the selection modes together to get great automatic image cutouts in Photoshop. Although the Object Selection tool makes clean selections, it can be tedious to perfectly select an edge. Even with constant refining, Photoshop can still struggle to perfectly snap to the edge of your subject. Channels are a feature that breaks down your image into three colour channels; the Red, Green and Blue channels.
Together these channels make up all the colours in your image. Individually, these 3 channels represent varying layers of contrast in your image. You can leverage this contrast to create highly accurate selections to cut out images in Photoshop. The channels can be accessed in your layers panel. At the top of your layers panel, you will notice a tab that reads channels.
Click that tab to access your channels. Unfortunately, there is not a native keyboard shortcut to access the channels feature in Photoshop.
Channels are most useful when you want to cut out complicated images with high contrast. For example, a tree sitting against a sky, a person against a light coloured wall, or the silhouette of something against a bright background. Remember, this tool operates primarily through natural contrast. The more variance in your photo, the easier time channels will have to cut it out. I personally love to use channels when I have a complicated selection like tree branches or hair. Access your channels tab by click on the channels tab in your layer panel.
Click on each channel thumbnail to see which one has the most contrast between black and white. Besides the usual suspects like selection mode, feather, and anti-alias all discussed on The Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee Tools and The Rectangular and Elliptical Marquee Tools , you also get:. Width determines how close your cursor needs to be to an edge for the Magnetic Lasso to select it.
From the factory, this field is set to 10 pixels, but you can enter a value between 1 and You can also press Shift-[ to set the width to 1 and Shift-] to set it to Contrast controls how much color difference there needs to be between neighboring pixels for the Magnetic Lasso to recognize it as an edge. Frequency determines how many anchor points the tool lays down. You need more anchor points to select an area with lots of details than for a smooth area. Setting this field to 0 makes Photoshop add very few points, and makes it have a point party.
The factory setting—57—usually works fine. Use tablet pressure to change pen width. If you have a pressure-sensitive digital drawing tablet, turning on this setting—whose icon looks like a pen tip with circles around it—lets you override the Width setting by pressing harder or softer on the tablet with your stylus.
The box on The Joy of Painter has more about digital drawing tablets. It works best on images with a strong, in-focus subject and a soft, blurry background, like the one in Figure With decent contrast, the selection you get with this command is pretty darn good!
Rare is the photo where Focus Area generates a perfect selection, but you can tweak the result easily enough using the settings shown here. Plus, this command is a great first step in creating a selection that you intend to fine-tune in the Refine Edge dialog box. The View menu lets you change the way Photoshop previews the selection in your document; see page for a discussion of these options.
Photoshop analyzes your image and automatically generates an initial selection. You can also mouse over to your image and paint across any areas that Photoshop missed that you want included in the selection Photoshop automatically activates the Add brush labeled in Figure When you release your mouse button, Photoshop analyzes what you painted across.
Alternatively, you can use the Zoom and Hand tools in the Focus Area dialog box. To remove an area from the selection, click the Subtract brush to activate it, and then brush across that spot, or simply Option-drag Alt-drag on a PC with the Add brush to put it in subtract mode. Either way, when you release your mouse button, Photoshop analyzes the area you painted across and hopefully removes it from the selection again, how well Photoshop does depends on the amount of contrast between your subject and background.
If the selection still needs more work, click Refine Edge to open the selection in the powerful Refine Edge dialog box, which is covered starting on Creating Selections with Channels. Another great way to select an irregular object or area is to trace its outline with the Pen tool.
And then once the couple is selected, I'll show you a quick way to leave your subject in color and turn the rest of the photo to black and white:. It has a keyboard shortcut of W :. If one of the other tools in that slot was previously active, click and hold on the tool's icon until a fly-out menu appears, and then choose the Object Selection Tool from the menu:.

Auto-Enhance adds a slight amount of smoothing to the edges of your selection. The difference with Auto-Enhance on or off is minimal, so it's usually fine to leave it off:. The Object Subtract option allows Photoshop to use its advanced Object Selection technology when subtracting unwanted areas from the initial selection.
When Object Subtract is turned off, the Object Selection Tool behaves just like the standard Rectangular Marquee or Lasso Tool and simply removes whatever pixels you manually drag around. Object Subtract should almost always be left on. The way the Object Selection Tool works is that we draw a selection outline around the general area where the object appears.
Photoshop then looks inside the boundaries of that selection to find the object, and it wraps the selection outline around it. Once the initial selection is in place, we can add missing areas to the selection, or subtract areas from the selection, again just by dragging around them with the Object Selection Tool. Start by drawing your initial selection. The default Rectangle mode usually works best.
I'll draw a rectangular selection around the wedding couple. Try to stay fairly close to the object while still keeping it entirely within the selection boundaries:. If you started your selection outline in the wrong spot, keep your mouse button held down and press and hold the spacebar on your keyboard.
Drag your mouse to move the selection outline into place, and then release your spacebar to continue drawing the rest of the selection. Once you have surrounded the object with your selection outline, release your mouse button.
